Mr. Thari G. Pheko, Chief Executive Of BOCRA Retires

The Board of Botswana Communications Regulatory Authority (BOCRA) informs the communications industry stakeholders and members of the public that the employment of contract of Mr. Thari G. Pheko as Chief Executive of BOCRA ends on 30 April 2017.  Mr Pheko has chosen to pursue personal interests.  He retires from BOCRA after ten years of meritorious service as Chief Executive, the position he assumed in January 2007.

BOCRA appreciates and expresses its gratitude to Mr Pheko for his sterling leadership and the invaluable contribution he made towards the growth of communications sector in Botswana.

The Board assures all stakeholders that Mr Pheko leaves behind a team of dedicated professional staff to ensure uninterrupted continuity of the regulatory environment. 

Mr Tshoganetso Kepaletswe has since been appointed act as Chief Executive with effect from 1 May 2017.  Mr Kepaletswe has a wealth of regulatory experience having been with BOCRA since October 1997.  He is an Engineer by profession who served in various capacities up to the level of Deputy Chief Executive responsible for regulatory affairs. 

The Board pledges its unwavering support to Mr Tshoganetso Kepaletswe and wishes him all the success in his new role as Acting Chief Executive.

Botswana Hosts The World Telecommunication/ICT Indicators Symposium (21-23 November 2016)

The 14th World Telecommunication/ICT Indicators Symposium (WTIS) will take place in Botswana, from 21 to 23 November 2016. WTIS-2016 is organized by the Telecommunication Development Bureau (BDT) of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and hosted by the Government of Botswana.  

WTIS, first held in 1996, and annually since 2005, has evolved to become the main global forum for telecommunication and information society measurements. It includes high-level debates addressing key questions related to ICT policy and data. WTIS brings together delegates from all over the world, ranging from government ministers and business leaders to regulators, national statisticians, lead academics and ICT data producers and analysts. The objective of the Symposium is to debate new and emerging issues on ICT data and statistics and their role in policy making, to provide strategic guidance to the international community on information society trends and future monitoring. It also develops standards and methodologies for producing high-quality data and statistical indicators.

Invitation For Submission On Digital Terrestrial Television Licensing Framework

The Communications Regulatory Authority Act No. 19 of 2012 Section 6 Subsection 2 (h) provides that the Botswana Communications Regulatory Authority (BOCRA) “process applications for and issue, licences, permits, permissions, concessions and authorities for regulated sectors as may be prescribed”.

BOCRA has developed the Digital Terrestrial Television Licencing Framework to be used in the digital terrestrial television broadcast licensing. All digital terrestrial licences will be issued based on the licencing framework.

Stakeholders and interested parties are invited to make submissions to be considered in the final document which shall be the framework for licensing digital terrestrial television broadcasting in Botswana. Please note that this does not include cable, satellite, IPTV and other forms of broadcasting.

The document will be available and accessible from the BOCRA Website on the 8th January 2015.

The deadline for submissions is at close of business on the 23rd January 2015.

Following your comments, BOCRA will do the analysis and consider way forward which will include a consultative workshop to finalise the document.
